Centre for Geo-Information Science & Technology, Thiruvananthapuram
A critical mass of personnel in various organisations handling geo-spatial data need be exposed to emerging tools/ techniques in the area of Geo-information Science & Technology. Stakeholders participating in Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) initiatives funded by the Union and the State Governments are required to be trained on different facets of the concept and use of SDI in supporting Local Level Planning. Training and Research thus form an important component of NRDMS activities. A ‘Centre of Excellence on Geo-Information Science & Technology’ has therefore been set up at Kerala University, Thiruvananthapuram with the active support of Kerala Science & Technology Council to conduct training and promote research in frontier areas of Geo-Information Science & Technology. Courses have been launched at the Centre recently to train scientists, engineers, GIS professionals, and end-users on a regular basis. Keeping in view the local resource problems, themes like Ground water management, Coastal zone management; Biodiversity; and Urban health have been identified for intensive R & D using the available facilities.
