Health - GIS

Public health, being a geographic issue, finds many solutions in geospatial technology and epidemiology. There is great need   to develop Geospatial technological tools to address various aspects related to public health care.  As such   geospatial public health research and development program conceptually and by design, dealing with the description and analysis of communicable and chronic diseases with respect to the demographic, environmental, behavioral, socioeconomic and genetic risk factors, is proposed to be established as a National networking Program. The establishment of "NATIONAL GEOSPATIAL PUBLIC HEALTH DATA AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM [Health-DMS] would play a pivotal role in Health care, Disease mapping, Location based hazard vulnerability assessment, and health care emergency management, facilities planning, geospatial data and analysis and visualization. This would postulate, Interactive health maps on the web that allow citizens to understand health performance in their area vs. others with tremendous ease and clarity and dashboards” that enable administrators to track local health performance and issues. It is further envisaged that the integration of Geospatial analysis and modeling would strengthen the Health Management Information Systems. The Health-DMS networking program comprises of pilot studies in different parts of the country addressing the following issues:

  • Methods for disease and Risk mapping
  • Spatial patterns of diseases
  • Hotspot detection of diseases
  • Spatial diffusion of disease outbreak
  • Road map for Spatial Epidemiological Model
  • Geospatial analysis and visualization
  • Healthcare emergency management
  • Geospatial public health Interoperability
  • Location based hazard vulnerability assessment

In sum, the Geospatial Public Health Data and Management System would leverage the power of geospatial technology. This initiative, embodying the spirit of networking would facilitate administrators, technologists, policy makers and medical doctors to synergize towards a better public health management ingenuity.  This innovative schedule under the leadership of Dr Bhoop Singh, Head NRDMS, DST operating in a net working mode devours partaking of about 12 Institutions throughout the country to stake core methodologies and program materials. The details of the program and participating institutions are as follows:
